Report: Epstein enjoyed close relationship with New York health system, to the benefit of his friends
For Mr. Jeffrey Epstein, “anything is possible,” a surgeon at Mount Sinai in New York City said in an email exchange with the infamous sex trafficker, whose inbox was released by the U.S. Department of Justice in a dump of more than 3 million pages.
The surgeon wasn’t alluding to any nefarious activity and instead was responding to Epstein’s request for help. Specifically, Epstein was emailing the surgeon on behalf of a friend, who needed a hole from a nose ring fixed.
But this wasn’t the only incident where the mysterious financier leveraged the seemingly close relationship he had with the hospital. For a new report, Politico dug into the “Epstein Files”—more accurately called the “Epstein Gmail account”—only to find that the late investor often enjoyed special treatment when it came to getting services for him and his friends.
Per Politico, while it was well known that Epstein was a donor to the nonprofit health system—which is located in New York City, where the notorious criminal socialite spent much of his time—he gifted more than 10 times what was previously disclosed.
Looking at just the time period after Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to the charge of procuring for prostitution a minor, he donated more than $250,000 to Mount Sinai, Politico wrote.
If Epstein wanted a procedure done or needed patient care, he was able to get an appointment even when hospitals were booked. He also received housecalls—with one being for a flu shot, according to emails examined by reporters at Politico.
Epstein would also donate directly to research initiatives conducted by the surgeons themselves, one of whom he even invited to his private island as a guest, albeit with his family and while the doctor was on vacation at nearby St. John.
There is no indication of any criminal activity; rather the report paints a picture of an unimaginably wealthy man who was able to gain friends in high places through the use of charity.
No balance due for world leader
In a noteworthy story from the report, records show Epstein connected former Norwegian prime minister Thorbjørn Jagland to a cardiologist at the health system, and even paid his bill of $1,995. This happened in 2012.
The cardiologist, who was also Epstein's doctor, later had dinner at the billionaire's mansion in 2016.
After that, one set of text messages obtained by Politico even show the then-convicted sex offender barking orders not to keep a friend of his, a notable investor, waiting for services.
Politico’s report includes a lot more details, including names. Read their full report at the link below.
