The United States has some of the best hospitals in the entire world, but only 25 made Newsweek’s 2022 list of the Best Hospitals in the World.
Within the top 10 hospitals in the world, the U.S. had a good showing, including taking the top three spots overall. Here are the top 10 best hospitals in the world:

- Cleveland Clinic
- Massachusetts General Hospital
- Toronto General Hospital (Toronto, Canada)
- Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Berlin, Germany)
- The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore)
- AP-HP - Hôpital Universitaire Pitié Salpêtrière (Paris, France)
- Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset (Solna, Sweden)
- Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles)
- Sheba Medical Center (Ramat Gan, Israel)
Hospitals at the top were recognized for their ability to quickly adapt to the changing times during the COVID-19 era, Newsweek noted. In fact, the ability and drive to innovate is key for hospitals to maintain their top status during a global pandemic.
"We had to very rapidly convert beds to ICU beds, and close large sections of the hospital, then come up with staff to cover those beds,” said David Bates, MD, chief of general internal medicine and primary care at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital (ranked No. 17 overall). “There were also great challenges with managing our supply chain for things like ventilators and personal protective equipment."
Newsweek considered 2,200 hospitals in its best of list this year, including looking at three new countries on the list — Colombia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Overall, 21 countries were recognized in the top 150 hospitals, with the U.S. in the lead with 33 hospitals on the list. Germany was next to be most represented on the list with 14; followed by Italy and France with 10 each; and South Korea with eight.
