100 employees to be laid off at MedStar Washington
MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., will lay off 100 employees, or 2 percent of its workforce, according to a June 2 email obtained by the Washington Business Journal.
"We have a sizable budget shortfall for the coming year—a gap between our budgeted revenue and expenses—and we have to close that gap before July 1, when the new fiscal year begins," said hospital president John Sullivan.
The hospital has been no stranger to large layoffs during this decade. The center cut 300 positions, or 5 percent of its workforce, in 2013, following a 200-worker layoff in 2011. MedStar wouldn’t confirm what positions will be impacted by the latest reduction in staff, only saying it will involve managers and non-managers.
