The goal of health informatics systems is to enable smooth transfer of data and cybersecurity across the healthcare enterprise. This includes patient information, images, subspecialty reporting systems, lab results, scheduling, revenue management, hospital inventory, and many other health IT systems. These systems include the electronic medical record (EMR) admission discharge and transfer (ADT) system, hospital information system (HIS), radiology picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), cardiovascular information systems (CVIS), archive solutions including cloud storage and vendor neutral archives (VNA), and other medical informatics systems.

Past buzz, down to business

Health imaging exchange (HIE) has passed the buzzword mantle to a new contender, accountable care organizations (ACOs). This is more than a move in the health IT lexicon and evidence of its passage was everywhere at HIMSS11 in Orlando, Fla. HIEs haven't vanished and their endemic challenges remain as well. There were 24 educational sessions and a dedicated HIE Symposium on the HIMSS syllabus, and a variety of vendors on the show floor; while HIE flavored the interoperability showcase as well.

Pa. health system to go live on GE HIE

Butler Health System (BHS), which serves western Pennsylvania communities, will implement a health information exchange (HIE) from GE Healthcare to enable clinical information access between BHS and its affiliated and independent physicians, as well as referral hospitals outside of the immediate community.
