NeHC survey identifies top challenges for HIE stakeholders

Privacy and security, adoption and use, and sustainability were named as the top challenges to health information exchange (HIE) in a recent National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) stakeholder survey.

The survey, conducted in December 2010 and January 2011, found that the HIE issues causing the greatest concern were concentrated among privacy and security (30 percent), adoption and use (16 percent) and sustainability (14 percent). Sixty percent of stakeholders indicated that they would be willing to collaborate on tools relating to adoption and use (21 percent), privacy and security (20 percent), and governance (19 percent), according to the Washington, D.C.-based organization.

Stakeholders reported they would be interested in receiving regular updates about governance (23 percent), privacy and security (19 percent) and legislative barriers and regulations (19 percent), reflecting the rapid changes in the HIE arena.

Respondents to the NeHC survey included healthcare providers (21.8 percent), government agencies (16.4 percent), consultants (13.9 percent), health information organizations (10.9 percent), vendors (10.3 percent) and others (12.1 percent).
