CVS Health taps Google Cloud for new AI patient engagement platform

CVS Health has revealed it’s collaborating with Alphabet to tap Google Cloud for powering a new AI-powered patient engagement platform. The retailer says the system is designed to improve outcomes for consumers “regardless of which pharmacy, care provider, medical insurance company, pharmacy benefits manager and digital health solution providers they use.”

This means even those who rely on a competitor’s pharmacy for their drugs can still use the platform, called Health100. CVS Health said it will be relying on Google's cloud infrastructure to provide security and bring together data from different sources for the purpose of improved care management.

Patients who utilize the platform will be able to find providers for necessary services, locate places to get their prescriptions at the cheapest price and understand what their insurance will cover at a glance.

The goal, CVS stated, is to reduce out-of-pocket spending.

“Consumer engagement in their own health and care is the holy grail that will drive trust and much better health outcomes,” Tilak Mandadi, chief experience and technology officer at CVS Health said in the announcement. “We are putting the consumer at the center to enable their health care partners to seamlessly connect with them as part of a fully integrated experience.”

Personalized AI assistant

Health100 is built using an agentic AI model, which means it pulls up information upon request and communicates directly with the user. CVS confirmed it will incorporate visuals and voice to take engagement beyond a typical text chat.

Human interaction will be minimal, and the company envisions the app as a full service digital consultant for patients to navigate the healthcare system.

Patients will be able to customize and adjust the AI results and responses to their individual needs and preferences, Google and CVS added.

The full details of how the app will work will be revealed at Google’s annual healthcare event, The Check Up, scheduled for March 18, the companies said. Health100 is more than a product and will operate as a “health technology services subsidiary” of CVS, the pharmacy chain confirmed.

It will launch sometime this year.
