U.S. clinical mobility spending to hit $5.4B by 2016

Clinical mobility spending is forecast to grow from $2.9 billion in 2011 to $5.4 billion in 2016 at a compound growth rate of 12.7 percent, according a report by Mass.-based research and consulting firm IDC Health Insights.

The report, Business Strategy: U.S. Clinical Mobility 2011-2016 – Forecast and Analysis, examines growth in clinical mobility in areas including hardware—such as mobile devices and back-end data center infrastructure—and IT services and software.

The growth stems from the deployment of Meaningful Use technologies including EHRs, e-prescription services, computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and health information exchange, as they drive mobile point of care solutions to streamline clinical workflows.

The report identifies the following technology developments to impact the clinical mobility market:

  • Rising consumer and clinical adoption of technology
  • Increased availability of EHR information and the resulting clinicians' desire for mobile access to patient data at the point of care
  • Infrastructure demands of pervasive computing
  • Security to comply with increasingly more stringent HIPAA requirements

"The highly collaborative and mobile nature of clinical teams makes the strategic investment in clinical mobility solutions essential to meet the intense demands being placed on healthcare providers today," said Lynne A. Dunbrack, IDC's program director.
