Palomar Health and Qualcomm launch wearable device incubator

San Diego-based Palomar Health and Qualcomm Life are joining forces to explore the application of wearable computing in medicine.

The health system and vendor announced the launch of a new incubator, Glassomics, and their plans to establish an innovation lab to explore future mobile applications that incorporate wearable technology across the clinical and consumer sectors. The testing will take place at the $1 billion Palomar Health Medical Center in Escondido, which opened for patient care in August 2012.

The incubator will investigate potential uses of glassware in the healthcare setting, including augmented reality guided clinical applications, new user experience paradigms for clinical navigation of complex data, physiological monitoring applications and genomic information mapping and visualization, according to a July 25 press release. The partners are seeking out private equity firms, healthcare organizations and technology companies to collaborate.

“Palomar Health will provide the ideal incubation environment, incorporating the new Palomar Medical Center, a brand new, technologically-advanced hospital with many advanced wireless capabilities, including the first deployment of Sotera Wireless Visi Mobile patient vital sign monitors and AirStrip’s innovative mobile data platform,” said Orlando Portale, chief innovation officer.
