Oregon to license MR, ultrasound techs

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski has signed into law a bill requiring medical imaging professionals who provide sonography and MRI to have state licenses.

Oregon is the second state to regulate sonography and the third to license MRI. New Mexico licenses both sonography and MR, while West Virginia was the first state to regulate MR.

Under the Oregon law, the Oregon Board of Radiologic Technologists now becomes the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging. The Oregon licensure law goes into effect July 1, 2010, with the requirement that persons applying on or after Jan. 1, 2014 for a license to practice sonography or MR have a credential issued by a nationally recognized credentialing organization.

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists has been active in lobbying for state licensing laws for these medical imaging practices.

“I commend those who worked diligently over the last two years to develop an acceptable licensure law that will enable the state to protect its citizens,” said Diane Mayo, ASRT president.
