Fitbit, Dexcom partner to develop continuous glucose monitoring on smartwatch

Fitbit and Dexcom are partnering to develop a comprehensive health and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) smartwatch to assist individuals with diabetes in managing the chronic disease.

More than 400 million people struggle with the daily maintenance of living with diabetes. The collaboration of Dexcom CGM data with Fitbit’s Ionic smartwatch hopes to develop a more complete picture of the user’s overall health. Through the smartwatch, users will be able to review daily activities and glucose levels at the push of a button.

“The strength of our brand and our ability to track critical health metrics continuously for up to 4+ days, coupled with Dexcom’s market leadership in CGM, present a powerful combination that we hope will help millions of people better manage their diabetes,” said James Park, CEO of Fitbit. “With Ionic, we are focused on driving positive health outcomes and more health focused tools, and this collaboration is a wonderful example of how we plan to bring that vision to our users.”

The Ionic smartwatch provides users with a SpO2 sensor, GPS tracking and workout and heart-rate tracking. When implemented with the Dexcom CGM display, the watch will allow users to connect with others to participate in chats, offer and receive support, and share successes in managing their health.
