CMS offers $100M in grants for healthy behavior

A $100 million program offered by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act enables states to grant incentives to state Medicaid enrollees who adopt healthy behaviors such as quitting smoking or losing weight.

States may apply to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for the Medicaid Incentives for Prevention of Chronic Diseases Program grants to fund programs that demonstrate changes in health risk and outcomes.

Rewards could range from direct cash incentives, gift cards to grocery stores or other retailers, reduced Medicaid program fees (if any apply) or offering services not normally available through Medicaid, HHS stated.

The program will focus on behaviors that cause critical chronic conditions such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
