CHIME presents numerous HIT awards

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) presented several awards during its Fall CIO Forum in Indian Wells, Calif., held Oct. 16-19.

2012 Innovator of the Year Award: Edward Martinez, senior VP and CIO at Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH). MCH’s eHealth Initiative offers mobile applications, accelerated movement of clinical data, streamlined internal processes and greater communication with underserved segments of the community. As leader of the initiative, Martinez also oversaw the development and deployment of a regional pediatric telehealth command center and interactive video devices.

By developing innovative mobile applications, accelerating the movement of clinical data, streamlining internal processes and reaching out to underserved segments of the community, MCH's eHealth Initiative is transforming the delivery of care to the South Florida community.

Collaboration Award: New York-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) and Siemens Healthcare earned this award for their close working relationship between Aurelia G. Boyer, NYP’s senior VP and CIO and John Glaser, PhD, CEO of Siemens Healthcare, Health Services Business Unit, who improved NYP’s existing patient portal using an agile development model that resulted in rapid deployment and measurably increased patient engagement and satisfaction. The collaborative project lead to a 42 percent increase of appointments scheduled using myNYP.org, and lowered the no-show rate from 20 percent to 12 percent over a period of six months after the functionality was made available in January.

2012 Transformational Leadership Award: Given in partnership with the American Hospital Association, this award went to Beaumont Health System, a three-hospital system in Michigan, for its system-wide safety initiative to implement barcoding to administer medication. The project prevented 23,500 possible drug errors from December 2011 through July. Beaumont made medication error prevention a strategic imperative for improving patient safety, quality and cost at its three hospitals. Each Beaumont patient has a unique bar code that only exists on his or her wristband, which helps to protect the integrity of the positive patient ID and medication barcode process. The system also alerts the nurse if the medication order is expired, discontinued or if it’s the wrong medication or the wrong patient.

Lifetime Achievement Award: John Glaser, PhD, CEO, Siemens Healthcare, Health Services Business Unit, was recognized for his contributions to the health IT industry throughout his 35-year career. Prior to joining Siemens Healthcare in 2010, Glaser was VP and CIO of Partners Healthcare in Boston.

Glaser has championed the push to demonstrate how IT capabilities can enhance healthcare delivery and served as the founding chairman of CHIME in 1992. He has been affiliated with more than 70 industry associations, committees and workgroups throughout his career. His professional activities span from serving as an adjunct professor at several universities to being named senior advisor to the Office of the National Coordinator in 2009. Glaser was previously recognized by CHIME when it created its John P. Glaser Scholarship.

Fellowship status: Edward W. Marx, senior VP and CIO at Texas Health Resources in Arlington, is responsible for developing leaders and leveraging technologies to transform, grow and run Texas Health. Marx also is the author of online blog, “CIO Unplugged.” Randy McCleese is VP of information services and CIO at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Ky. Earlier this year, McCleese received a formal letter of recognition from Kentucky State Rep. John Will Stacy (D) for his involvement with CHIME and his outstanding commitment in advancing the adoption of health information technology in his home state of Kentucky.
