3M's healthcare unit assists with strong Q2 company-wide

3M has reported that its second quarter net income was $1.121 billion versus $783 million in the second quarter of 2009, with a strong showing across all its business segments, including healthcare.

In fact, the St. Paul, Minn.-based company said all six of its business segments posted operating margins of 22 percent or higher. 3M also recorded second-quarter net sales of $6.7 billion--an increase of 17.7 percent compared with the second quarter of 2009.

3M said its healthcare segment posted quarterly sales of $1.1 billion, up 5.7 percent, fueled primarily by drug delivery systems, skin and wound care, health information systems and the oral care business, the company reported.

For its healthcare unit, sales improved in all businesses and geographic regions, with strength in electronics and communications at 32 percent each, display and graphics at 30 percent and industrial and transportation at 23 percent, the company said.
