With just a few days left in the enrollment period, the White House reported that more than six million individuals have signed up for private insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

President Obama announced the milestone during a conference call with healthcare navigators and volunteers while he was traveling in Italy.

"The president encouraged the navigators and volunteers to redouble their efforts over the next four days and leave no stone unturned," the White House said in a statement.

The numbers will continue to grow. The Obama administration announced earlier this week that it is offering additional time to certain individuals unable to enroll in the health plans. All consumers who have begun to apply for coverage on HealthCare.gov, but who do not finish by March 31 deadline, will have until about mid-April to ask for an extension, according to the Washington Post.
