5,500+ new, revised ICD-10 codes in the works for 2017

More than 5,500 diagnosis and procedures codes will be added to the ICD-10 coding system for fiscal year 2017.

Because of a freeze on ICD-10 coding updates prior to the Oct. 1, 2015, implementation date, the new codes are being added now, according to the American Hospital Association.

The new procedure coding system codes are available on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' website and the new diagnosis codes will be included in the hospital inpatient prospective payment system proposed rule for fiscal year 2017, which is expected to be released next month.
