New York man arrested for threatening family of UnitedHealthcare CEO, hours after his murder
A man in New York was arrested and faces federal charges of cyberstalking after allegedly threatening the family of slain UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
According to prosecutors, Shane Daley, 40, left multiple voicemails for Thompson’s widow, threatening her and her children with violence. The calls began on Dec. 4, 2024, mere hours after Thompson was shot and killed outside a hotel in Manhattan.
Daley allegedly said Thompson’s children and relatives deserved to be killed, in addition to celebrating the murder of the CEO. Authorities said he made several calls over a three-day period.
“Brian Thompson was gunned down in midtown Manhattan. Daley, as alleged, gleefully welcomed this tragedy and did all that he could to increase the Thompson family's pain and suffering,” Acting U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III said in a statement.
"My office and its partners will now do all that we can to hold him accountable for this vicious and outrageous conduct,” he added.
As for what was specifically said by Daley, prosecutors allege that the man said Thompson and his children "deserved to meet the same violent end.”
He was arrested on Wednesday and faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
Suspected killer awaits trial
The man accused of shooting Thompson in the back—killing him as he walked toward UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor meeting in New York City—is 27-year-old Luigi Mangione of Maryland, who faces state and federal charges of first-degree murder.
In the federal case, the U.S. Department of Justice said it will be seeking the death penalty.
Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania days after the crime. In his possession, prosecutors said he had the murder weapon, a modified pistol, and a hand-written note where he indirectly explains his actions.
Despite the reported evidence and multiple cases against him, Mangione has pleaded not guilty and through his attorney denies killing Thompson. His trial on the state charge of murder is set to begin on Sept. 16.
