Man arrested for multiple murders, including slaying of Detroit neurosurgeon

A man has been charged in the murder of a neurosurgeon in Michigan, whose body was found shot dead in his home in April 2023.

Prosecutors working on the case said Devon Hoover, MD, 53, was shot twice and found murdered in the third-floor attic crawl space at his Detroit residence. His body was discovered by police during a well-being check initiated by a family member.

Desmond Burks, 34, with whom Hoover was in an “intimate relationship” has now been charged in his killing, authorities said. Cellphone analysis showed the two had exchanged thousands of text messages.

Allegedly, Burks would occasionally charge Hoover for sexual services. Physical evidence on property held by Burks was linked to Hoover, who had possessions missing from his residence.

Burks is behind bars and facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was also charged with larceny of over $20,000. Additionally, Burks is facing a second murder charge from an unrelated case, described by prosecutors as a road rage incident.
