America’s 100 best hospitals, according to Healthgrades

Healthgrades has released its annual lists of the U.S. hospitals that top its rankings for the current year.

That’s lists, plural, as the company breaks out its data into the 50 best (the nation’s top 1%), 100 best (top 2%) and 250 best (top 5%) at achieving high-quality outcomes for 32 conditions and procedures.

The top 1% represent hospitals that “consistently exhibit exceptional, comprehensive quality care,” according to the company, while the top 2% exhibit “clinical excellence year over year” and the top 5% are showing overall clinical excellence in 2020.

Healthgrades says it arrives at its results after analyzing the performance of close to 4,500 hospitals treating patients for such conditions as heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke.

“Overall, patients treated in hospitals named as America’s Best Hospitals have, on average, a 26.6% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive this award,” the company states. “If all hospitals, as a group, performed similarly to America’s Best Hospitals, 161,930 lives could potentially have been saved.”
