Elon Musk and his business partner abruptly leave DOGE

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has been serving in President Trump’s administration as a key advisor on government spending through his Department of Government Efficiency—or “DOGE,” named after a popular Internet meme—announced he is leaving government, effective immediately.

In a statement on Twitter/X, Musk thanked Trump and said that his time as a special government employee had come to an end. During his tenure, Musk spearheaded efforts to cut tens of thousands of federal jobs and funding to dozens of government agencies, including those under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Veterans Affairs.

The abrupt nature of the cuts resulted in dozens of lawsuits, many challenging the executive branch’s authority to eliminate funds allocated by Congress and others from states who fear agencies in the HHS, as one example, are no longer functioning.

In a report, Reuters confirmed that Musk would be “off-boarding” on Wednesday. Sources also told the outlet Musk did not meet with Trump before stepping down.

However, his departure coincides with earlier statements Musk and the Trump administration have made about his tenure at DOGE being only temporary—though it may have been planned to last longer, as Reuters reports that a “source with knowledge of the matter” said the decision for Musk to depart came from senior staff within the White House.

Conflicting interests

There were numerous reports detailing Musk’s tumultuous relationship with others in the Trump administration, including HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Concerns were also raised over Musk, a private businessman working on AI-related projects, and his level of access to government and public data. Legal challenges were filed claiming DOGE associates were violating the Privacy Act, with other media reports indicating data was being taken and possibly used for private ventures.

The Trump administration has maintained DOGE had read-only access to government data, and courts have ruled that the executive branch must ensure that remains the case.  

The facts surrounding DOGE’s activities are difficult to work out, considering the recency of everything that’s happened.

Many lawsuits are still tied up in courts, including some challenging staffing cuts at HHS and other federal agencies, as well as others claiming municipalities are owed Congress-appropriated funds cut by DOGE and Trump.

The outcome remains to be seen. However, after sweeping cuts by DOGE left the Food and Drug Administration unable to respond to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, the agency opted to hire staff back.

HHS, too, announced last week it’s hiring more medical coders to address a backlog of Medicare Advantage audits.

With Musk’s departure, the meme-themed agency he created is officially dissolved, as it was allowed on a temporary basis via an executive order from President Trump. Leaving with Musk is his longtime associate and business partner, Steve Davis, who had also been working with DOGE to slash the federal government.

Musk said he will continue to serve as an unofficial advisor to the White House.
