Texas group uses analytics to cut readmissions

Southeast Texas Medical Associates (SETMA), a primary healthcare group based in Beaumont, Texas, is utilizing IBM business analytics software to review trend data to help identify causes and design interventions to prevent patient readmissions.

Using the IBM software, SETMA has cut the number of patient hospital readmissions by 22 percent in the first six months of its practice-level research, by identifying trends and assessing treatment protocols to develop effective post-hospital treatment care programs, according to IBM, of Armonk, N.Y.

The healthcare group is using the analytics software to identify the treatment interruptions and other things that can cause a patient to return into the hospital after discharge, IBM stated. In addition, the software provides patients access to data related to their own personal health goals, so they can view, track and compare their progress to that of other patients with similar conditions, the company added.
