Addressing substance abuse disorders in the workplace

Continuous communication and a functional support system are keys to keeping individuals on the track to substance abuse recovery. Matthew La Rocco, a certified alcohol and drug counselor, has developed a method for businesses to improve the view and care of these individuals.

As a recovering substance abuser himself, La Rocco found comfort in working across the hallway from two drug counselors often offered support and advice.

“There’s this need for us then to really invest in the people that we work with. We want to make sure that we have the best employees and that our employees function as best as they possibly can at work,” said La Rocco. “That means you can talk about drugs. You can talk about having a problem with drugs.”
