AstraZeneca pledges $50B in U.S. investments, announces Virginia facility

British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has revealed plans to invest $50 billion in scaling up its manufacturing and research capabilities in the U.S., beginning with the construction of a new Virginia-based complex. Once completed, the company said, the location will be its largest such facility worldwide.

In a press release, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick is quoted as crediting sweeping tariffs from President Donald Trump with AstraZeneca’s decision to move more manufacturing into the U.S. According to the company, it expects to generate 50% of its projected $80 billion in revenue from sales within the country.

The new facility, which is scheduled to open in 2030, will produce weight-loss drugs and similar substances used to manage diabetes, specifically oral GLP-1, baxdrostat, oral PCSK9 and other products.

Drugs manufactured at the facility are expected to support global sales, AstraZeneca added in the statement.

“Today’s announcement underpins our belief in America’s innovation in biopharmaceuticals and our commitment to the millions of patients who need our medicines in America and globally,” said Pascal Soriot, CEO of AstraZeneca, confirming the 2030 development target.

Long-term roadmap includes numerous upgrades

The company added that the $50 billion will also fund projects to expand its manufacturing and research footprint in Maryland, Indiana, and Texas. Additionally, it said it plans to construct a "state-of-the-art" research and development center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This new multi-billion-dollar capital investment is in addition to the $3.5 billion it announced in November 2024, the company confirmed.

As part of its long-term plan to bring research and manufacturing into the U.S., AstraZeneca said it is also looking to shore up clinical trial operations. It teased new trial sites, though specifics have yet to be announced.

Its stock rose 2% on the day following the release of the news.
