ONC rep confirms Mostashari's support for Stage 2 delay

During a Health IT Policy Committee meeting this week, Farzad Mostashari, MD, national coordinator for Health IT, reportedly stated that he supports the idea of delaying Stage 2 for the meaningful use of EHRs to 2014 for those first attesting to meaningful use in 2011.

Parmeeth Atwal, JD, MPH, of the communications and outreach department at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), confirmed Mostashari's comments in an email correspondence with CMIO.

Mostashari's remarks "are meant to indicate the thinking ... that will help inform the Stage 2 rulemaking. These remarks are not intended to pre-empt the rulemaking process,” Atwal wrote.

There have been widespread calls for delays in Stage 2, and last month the Health IT Policy Committee recommended that the ONC add a year to the phasing in of Stage 2 meaningful use expectations.
