CEO resigns following troubled EHR implementation

A Georgia hospital CEO and president has stepped down amid reports of a botched EHR implementation.

Athens Regional Health Systems’ James “Jamey” Thaw left his position after three years. A letter signed by more than one dozen physicians affiliated with the organization reveals that the departure occurred amidst concerns regarding the implementation of a Cerner EHR system in early May, according to the Athens-Banner Herald.

In that letter, physicians expressed concerns about “medication errors ... orders being lost or overlooked ... (emergency department) patients leaving after long waits; and of an inpatient who wasn’t seen by a physician for (five) days." Also, they asserted that the timeline to implement the EHR was too aggressive and that users were ill-prepared to use the system, according to the news article.
