ARRS: X-ray guided steroid injection provides alternative to tendonitis
As a different approach to conventional treatments of hamstring tendonitis, fluoroscopic-guided steroid injections offer a safe and elective alternative for patients, according to research presented at the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) annual meeting in San Diego on May 4.
Manickam Kumaravel, MD, the study's lead author, and colleagues from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston recruited 16 patients from the center with hamstring tendonitis, a condition prevalent in athletes presenting with inflammation in one or more of the hamstring tendons.
Each of the participants was treated with x-ray guided cortisone injections.
The researchers said that following the treatment, 11 out of the 16 patients showed “major improvement.” Minimal to moderate improvement was noted in the remaining five patients.
In addition, no immediate or long-term complications were found in any of the patients or at the injection sites, explained Kumaravel and colleagues.
Noting that traditional treatment methods of this condition can include rest, anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy, Kumaravel concluded: “Our study suggests that x-ray guided steroid injections are safe and beneficial for the treatment of hamstring tendonitis in athletes.”
