Medicity awarded U.S. patent for HIE technology

Health information exchange (HIE) company Medicity has been awarded a patent for its agent-grid technology for HIE by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The agent-grid technology is a main component for Medicity's HIE integration program Novo Grid.

Novo Grid offers a program that enables information exchange among healthcare providers by leveraging agents that communicate over the Internet without the need to establish and support point-to point interfaces, according to the Salt Lake City-based company.

By performing workflow and integration tasks, the agents allow HIEs to adapt to the technology level of each practice--distributing data electronically to EHRs and making information available via the Web for paper-based practices, Medicity stated.
