Houston health system creates HIE

Memorial Hermann Healthcare System of Houston has launched a program to help push patient health data to authorized caregivers via the Memorial Hermann Information Exchange (MHIE).

MHIE, a free service for patients, uses an electronic network to integrate and house patients' digital medical records so they are accessible to authorized MHIE members.

MHIE consists of three components:
  • MHIE Clinical Information Exchange gives authorized users access to patients' health information contributed by all exchange members; aggregated continuity of care documents create an integrated patient record.
  • MHIE Diagnostic Test Orders and Results, an exchange for outpatient lab orders, lab and radiology results, radiology image links and transcribed documents, makes Memorial Hermann diagnostic test results available to authorized caregivers.
  • MHIE Image Gateway provides MHIE members with access to review and share medical images. Relevant diagnostic images are available to caregivers as a patient moves between different venues of care.

According to the organization, a future component of MHIE will be the patient health record, which will allow patients to communicate directly with their physicians and monitor their own medical information.
