‘Possibly thousands’ of medical records fly off truck

“Hundreds, possibly thousands” of medical records accidentally flew out of the back of a medical record disposal company’s truck in southwest Omaha, reports KETV.

The potential breach occurred when the operator of a Medi-Waste Disposal truck failed to properly secure the hatch on the back door. The source of the records—which contained protected personal health information—remained unknown, except that they had left an Omaha facility to be stored in Lincoln, according to the news report.

Volunteers helped secure the medical records as they flew away, and the owner of Medi-Waste reportedly said that he believes they recovered all of the documents.  Some “good Samaritans” reached into sewers to save as many records as they could, the station reported.
