HHS issues guide of HIPAA basics

In response to ongoing confusion about HIPAA, the Department of Health and Human Services has released a guide covering the basics of the law.

The guide covers the definition of covered entities and business associates, what exactly is protected health information (PHI), details of the breach notification rule, resources for complying with the law and more.

The guide also explains that the security rule relates to specific safeguards that covered entities and their business associates are required to implement to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of PHI.
