Former employee sentenced to two years for identity theft
A laboratory technician was sentenced to two years in federal prison for stealing identities at Alabama-based Flowers Hospital and using them fraudulently in tax returns, reports WTVY.com.
Kamarian Millender pled guilty last summer to identity theft, but attempted to withdraw the guilty pleas without avail.
In his role as lab technician at Flowers Hospital, Millender stole patient medical records, including personal identification information. Millender used the stolen information to file more than 100 false federal tax returns, which victimized approximately 73 individuals and sought to defraud the IRS out of approximately $536,028. The Internal Revenue Service successfully halted the vast majority of the falsely claimed refunds, however an estimated $18,915 in refunds were issued, according to a Department of Justice press release.
Millender still faces state charges for his involvement in the fraudulent activity.
