Attack of single-payer could be winning strategy for California GOP
Five months before the 2018 midterm elections, California Republicans see their opponents’ embrace of exploring single-payer healthcare as an opportunity.
“My opponent wants socialized medicine and government-run health care,” Rep. Mimi Walters, R-California, told The Hill. “The district does not support it.”
Democratic leadership has toyed with “Medicare for all” in recent months, but Republicans believe moderates in key districts in California—including seven GOP-held seats that are top targets for Democratcs—will reject such a leftward lurch.
“It does really well right now, but will that change with millions of dollars of spending in a concerted effort by Republicans to make people feel like Medicare for all means trillions of dollars in tax increases?” one Democratic strategist told The Hill.
