From an update from the Office of the National Health IT Coordinator (ONC) to advice on proper use of mobile devices, achieving meaningful use and driving innovation, there's something for everyone at this year's Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society convention in Las Vegas Feb. 21-24. Presented below are CMIO’s top picks for hot topics. Choose your hottest topics based on the priorities at your organization.

Expect a full house on Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 22), when the ONC presents a town hall meeting, Advancing Health IT into the Future. Farzad Mostashari, MD, national coordinator for health IT and others from the ONC's leadership team will host this interactive session covering current programs and efforts and future plans to advance the national health IT agenda. The team plans to engage the audience in an open dialogue and solicit input regarding critical next steps in the effort to further health IT.

Mostashari also delivers a keynote address on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 23. Again, with so much riding on meaningful use and other programs, expect a big audience eager to learn more about the latest rules, regulations and any timeline changes.

A December 2011 report from healthcare market researcher KLAS found that providers believe poor integration with clinical workflow to be the biggest obstacle to clinical decision support (CDS) success but they remain optimistic about the future since CDS tools increase workflow integration, usability and adoption. At HIMSS12, The People of Clinical Decision Support session will help those interested in learning more about successfully implementing effective CDS by including research on the people and committees needed.

CDS and other health IT initiatives require engaged and enthusiastic physicians to be successful. Cultivating and Empowering Physician IT Champions will provide advice on how to find and develop these clinicians crucial to achieve health IT goals.

A representative from Kaiser Permanente presents Innovation: A Key Driver in Health IT Investments Leading to ROI. The session will cover the many and varied ways Kaiser Permanente has driven innovation within the organization.

Smartphones, tables and a host of other mobile devices present opportunities for efficiencies and convenience as well as security risks. Leveraging Mobile Technologies to Achieve Better Outcomes is one of several sessions offered at HIMSS12 to help users get a handle on both the benefits and the risks of these ubiquitous devices.

CMIO will be tracking and analyzing these and the full array of other hot topics impacting health IT. Be sure to read our live HIMSS12 coverage from Feb. 21 on to stay on top of the economics, informatics and practical issues central to the role of CMIO.

Finally, let us know how these and other hot topics are impacting your efforts. We’d love to hear from you.
