Cisco sponsors California telehealth project

The California Telemedicine Pilot Project, sponsored by Cisco with the assistance of health organization Molina Healthcare, two community health centers in San Diego and the state of California, will connect more than 15 locations and provide health and wellness services to underserved communities throughout the state.

According to San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco, this pilot program should be fully operational within six months. The sites will be equipped to deliver telemedicine primary and specialty care services using Cisco HealthPresence, a care-at-a-distance technology that combines video, audio and medical information, said the company.

Through the California Telemedicine Pilot Project, Molina Healthcare, Mountain Health and Community Services, and La Maestra Community Health Centers will use Cisco’s HealthPresence to deliver primary and specialty care services. The cameras and electronic scopes will enable patients to see and listen to the medical exam in the same manner as the clinician, according to Cisco.

HealthPresence also enables members of a patient’s care team–primary care provider, specialist physicians, care manager, family members and others–to meet, regardless of location or distance, said the company.

As part of this program, Cisco is contributing $10 million of product, services and support.
