Utah exec’s ‘holy grail’ of healthcare starts with listening to patients
As STAT News puts it, University of Utah Health Care CEO Vivian Lee, MD, PhD, MBA, is looking for a revolution in healthcare, and it all starts with asking patients one question: What do you want from your care?
She has implemented other major changes in management of the health system, like posting unedited physician reviews online and building a massive database to track the system’s cost “to the penny.” It seems to have paid off, with the system being named No. 1 for quality in Vizient’s rankings of academic medical centers.
This new initiative, which patients answering on an iPad screen, is about emphasizing that a patient’s own goals shouldn’t get lost in the myriad world of traditional benchmarks and quality measures.
“That’s the holy grail for me,” Lee said. “Now we’re really going to start to define value in terms that matter to the patients.”
