Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine believe that a preventative pill for Alzheimer’s could be the solution in stopping this devastating disease.

The team worked to limit the amount of toxic proteins that accumulate in the brains of those who subsequently develop Alzheimer’s. In a study published in Neuron, the scientists reported some success in preventing proteins accumulation and the pathology they cause in animal models.

“When people started taking drugs that lower cholesterol, they lived longer and healthier lives rather than dying earlier of heart disease. Nobody has thought about Alzheimer’s disease in that light,” said senior study author Huda Zoghbi, MD, professor of molecular and human genetics and of pediatrics-neurology and developmental neuroscience at Baylor.
