ONC launches Patient @ Center initiative

The concept of patient-centered care has led to a proposed vision from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) with the goals of increasing self-management and prevention; seamless interaction with the healthcare system; and shared management of healthcare.

ONC envisions, by 2020, that: "The power of each individual is developed and unleashed to be active in managing their health and partnering in their health care, enabled by information and technology."

ONC has published an issue brief that summarizes steps to achieve the three overarching goals as well as current related activities underway at ONC and other organizations. The issue brief also describes opportunities, challenges and next steps toward achieving the vision.

In a post on ONC's Health IT Buzz blog, Jodi G. Daniel, JD, MPH, director of the ONC's Office of Policy and Planning, discussed the vision for Patient @ Center and promised more blog posts on the subject to facilitate a dialogue on the initiative.
