For the past two years, psychiatrist Erick Weintraub has broken a 2007 federal law by providing addiction counseling to patients from his office in Baltimore.

As the opioid epidemic continuous to gain momentum, many patients are unable to access treatment for a variety of reasons. In response, Weintraub has been counseling addiction patients and even prescribing them suboxone in defiance of a 2007 federal law requiring physicians to treat patients in person before continuing care in a telehealth setting.

“I’m not a guy in a trailer in the mountains prescribing drugs,” Weintraub told Politico. “We just felt this was a major public health crisis and we had an effective, evidence-based treatment."
