Lurie Children’s Hospital proposes $51 million expansion
Chicago’s Lurie Children’s Hospital has announced plans to increase its critical care services by almost 50 percent as part of a $51 million expansion.
According to CBS Chicago, the hospital would add 44 ICU beds and four neonatal ICU beds to bring the facility’s bed total to 336. The extra space is needed, the hospital said, as it had to turn away 100 critical care patients in 2016.
“That for us is something we can’t have,” Lurie’s chief nursing officer, Brian Stahulak, told CBS Chicago.
It’s also something the hospital had anticipated. When it moved to its current facility in 2012, the design incorporated nonpatient space which could be converted to clinical use. Since changing locations, Lurie has been named one of the best pediatric hospitals in the U.S.
