Apple to donate 1,000 watches for study on eating disorders
Apple will donate 1,000 of its watches to help the University of North Carolina School of Medicine researchers monitor how well the device tracks eating disorders, according to a report by CNBC.
The study is called BEGIN, which stands for Binge Eating Genetics Initiative, and aims to better understand overeating, the report said. Researchers are hoping to recruit 1,000 participants for the study who’ve dealt with binge eating or bulimia nervosa.
“Each participant will be given a free watch, courtesy of Apple, and researchers will monitor their heart rate using the device's sensor over the course of a month to see if there are spikes before binge eating episodes. It's likely that a binging and purging episode would cause some biological change that would show up in the Apple Watch data,” the report said.
