AMA enters app fray

The American Medical Association (AMA) has introduced a mobile application to assist physicians as they search for Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) billing codes.

The reference app is a guide to help physicians determine the appropriate CPT code to use for billing and features decision-tree logic and quick search options, according to the Chicago-based association.

The app is now available through the iTunes store.

The AMA also has launched the 2011 AMA App Challenge, which is open to all U.S. physicians, residents and medical students.

App Challenge applicants are encouraged to submit their ideas for original, innovative medical apps that could be used by physicians, residents/fellows or medical students in their daily careers.

AMA judges will select six to 10 finalists and two winners will be selected: one from the resident/fellow or medical student category and one from the physician category, according to the AMA. Winners will each receive $2,500 in cash and prizes, plus a trip for two to New Orleans for the unveiling of their winning idea at the AMA’s meeting in November.

Submissions will be accepted here through June 30.
