As AI continues its march through healthcare organizations around the world, the notion that it will replace the sector’s human workers fades but does not disappear. 

The National Academy of Medicine considers some pertinent ins and outs of GenAI. 

GenAI initiatives are complex and—in some cases—costly. “As such, the main rationale for pursuing them needs to be business growth, not workforce reductions.” 

The authors of the survey report note that AI tools mentioned by respondents run the gamut from automated appointment reminders to dynamic “care gap” messaging. 

As applications of AI spread rapidly across healthcare, ambient scribes are poised to become one of the fastest technology adoptions in the history of the sector. 

Many if not most hospitals and other provider organizations take a decided interest in what their peer institutions are doing with AI. A major motivator for the keen curiosity is gauging how well one is keeping up with the Joneses. So to speak.

Among the myriad processes to which AI could be meaningfully applied in healthcare, perhaps few are more easily overlooked than discharging patients from the hospital.
