New York-Presbyterian sued for overcharging patients for medical records
New York–Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center is the target of a class action lawsuit alleging it charged more than double the legal rate to patients seeking physical copies of their medical records.
According to the New York Post, one 72-year-old patient said she was charged $1.50 per page plus administrative fees, adding up to a total of $2,963 for her complete records. New York law only allows patients to be charged 75 cents per page.
“There is no other way to proceed. If you don’t pay, you don’t get them,’’ said Lowell Sidney. “I’m sure they’re savvy enough to know I’m going to pay whatever the price is.’’
The suit is asking for unspecified damages covering all patients who may have been overcharged between 2011 and 2016.
