Top 10 hospitals in the world for 2023

The United States has some of the best hospitals in the world, including the No. 1 overall best hospital, according to a recent ranking of hospitals by Newsweek.

The ranking comes as hospitals across the globe are still grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, and U.S. hospitals have faced a challenging operating environment after losing assistance they had received for the previous two years throughout the pandemic. Newsweek compiled the list based on not only quality of care but also commitment to research and innovation.

“The very best institutions also share another quality: consistency,” Newsweek wrote. “The world's best hospitals consistently attract the best people and provide the best outcomes for patients as well as the most important new therapies and research. Of all the hospitals in the world, relatively few can do all those things year in and year out. The best belong to a very exclusive club.”

Newsweek came up with the list with global data firm Statista for the fifth year, ranking more than 2,3000 hospitals in 28 countries, including one new country, Taiwan. Also for the first time this year, Newsweek ranked all top 250 global hospitals and listed the top hospitals by country. Newsweek also added another metric, and hospitals were surveyed regarding their PROMs implementation status. PROMs—or patient-reported outcomes measures—are standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life, according to the outlet.
