Meditab Software Guarantees ICD-10 Readiness and Provides Tips on Preparing for the ICD-10 Transition
Meditab Software Inc., known for its award-winning Intelligent Medical Software (IMS) integrated EHR, practice management, patient portal and reporting solutions, is guaranteeing that IMS will be ICD-10 ready by February 15, 2014, and they are backing that guarantee up with a money-back policy.
Additionally, in order to help with the upcoming transition, the largest financial system change to take place since 1983, Meditab is providing tips and guidance through a series of webinars and online resources.
According to Meditab's CEO, Mike Patel, "Without a doubt, every practice will need training. Just how much training will be required can be determined in advance with a gap analysis to assess the team’s knowledge of medical terminology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, anatomy and physiology." He goes on to say, "Samples from different types of medical records should be reviewed to see whether the current level of documentation contains enough detail for ICD-10 coding. This will help determine a baseline for each practice’s training needs."
Meditab shares these tips for ICD-10 readiness:
1. Identify and plan to update all systems to ICD-10 by making sure there is an understanding of current systems and processes currently in use by ICD-9.
2. Communicate with payers, clearinghouses and providers to determine their system readiness and ask questions about what they’re doing to prepare for the transition.
3. Ask payers if there are any contractual changes regarding coding specificity that could affect the processing of claims.
4. Document any potential workflow changes, particularly in the following areas:
- Clinical documentation
- Superbills or encounter forms
- Quality and public health reporting
5. Determine the training needs of staff and aim to plan accordingly. Depending on their roles, staff will require different specific pieces of education around ICD-10 coding.
6. Plan for added expenditures in time and resources as everyone works to prepare the practice and staff for the transition period.
7. Test, Test, Test - Before the October 1, 2014 deadline, make sure to test transaction submissions with vendors, payers and clearinghouses to ensure everything is going smoothly.
