The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a competition to find new innovations in patient access to primary care––with a total of $1 million in prizes attached.

The proposal comes after several healthcare CEOs signed onto a letter demanding action from Congress on gun violence.

Supporting telehealth, reforming Medicare, fixing the prior authorization process—these are three of five goals the American Medical Association is pursuing in an expansive new program.

In a promotional video for the plan, AMA noted that “after two years of taking care of this nation,” the association and the country owe their commitment to doctors.

Thirteen healthcare companies have reached $1 billion in valuation this year, an especially notable achievement as the U.S. economy approaches a recession and investors pull back.

The move is the largest single philanthropic commitment ever by the foundation, and the funding will primarily focus on helping build a racially and ethnically diverse health workforce.

Among the CEOs who signed the letter are a handful of prominent healthcare leaders.

The committee's approval comes days after the FDA shared details on a small number of trial participants who developed myocarditis or pericarditis after receiving the vaccine.
