Indiana health commissioner nominated for surgeon general
Indiana State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams, MD, has been nominated by President Donald Trump to be the next surgeon general.
Adams will be familiar with Vice President Mike Pence, who appointed Adams when he was governor of Indiana. As summarized by the Indianapolis Star, Adams dealt with a HIV outbreak in the state associated with drug use, eventually instituting a needle exchange program despite Pence’s initial reluctance. He was also an anesthesiologist Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis.
“Jerome is a lot of fun in the hospital. He’s very gifted at connecting with families,” said Charles Miramonti, MD chief of Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services as well as the hospital’s chief of care integration. “He can work a group of docs like few people I have ever seen.”
Adams would take over for Vivek Murthy, MD, who was dismissed by Trump in April.
