Former Mayo Clinic researcher gets 18 years in prison for supporting ISIS

A former research coordinator at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, has been handed an 18-year federal prison sentence for his role in sending material support to the terrorist group ISIS, vowing to conduct “lone wolf” attacks in the U.S.

Minneapolis NBC affiliate KARE 11 reported on the story at length. According to its reporting, Muhammad Masood, 31, obtained his medical degree in Pakistan and secured employment at the Mayo Clinic under an H-1B Visa. Masood was arrested in March 2020 by the FBI at a Minneapolis airport. At the time, he was preparing to board a flight bound for Los Angeles, where he intended to meet an individual he believed would facilitate his journey on a cargo ship to Syria.

He vowed to fight with ISIS in Syria as a combat medic. This revelation emerged during a conversation with an informant from the FBI. According to the FBI, his bags were full of combat gear at the time of his arrest.

Masood pleaded guilty to the charge in federal court.

Given the precarious excitement of the moment—or is it exciting precarity?—policymakers and healthcare leaders must set directives guiding not only what to do with AI but also when to do it.

The final list also included diabetes drugs sold by Boehringer Ingelheim and Merck. The first round of drug price negotiations reduced the Medicare prices for 10 popular drugs by up to 79%.

HHS has thought through the ways AI can and should become an integral part of healthcare, human services and public health. Last Friday—possibly just days ahead of seating a new secretary—the agency released a detailed plan for getting there from here.
