Digital pathology added to DICOM standards

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has contributed to the expansion of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) medical image exchange standard, Supplement 145, for the accommodation of pathology.

Supplement 145, the new standard for "Whole Microscopic Images," will enable electronic display, sharing, storage and management of larger images usually associated with pathology, and will facilitate health information interoperability of pathology medical images, various whole slide imaging equipment manufacturers, PACS and EHRs, according to CAP.
