Secret Service investigating Detroit patient data breach

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a breach of personal patient information at two Detroit-area hospital systems, according to Detroit Free Press.

The news followed an earlier announcement that an employee of Detroit Medical Center was found in possession of protected health information, including the names, personal health information, dates of birth and Social Security numbers of 1,087 patients at Harper University Hospital in Detroit. The DMC removed the employee’s access to all computer systems after police informed it of the breach and affected patients received free credit reporting services, according to the article.

In regard to the Secret Service investigation, few details have been released and no arrests or charges have yet been filed. In addition to protecting the president, the Secret Service has jurisdiction over many financial crimes and for investigating identity crimes and money counterfeiting operations, according to Detroit Free Press
