Calif. provider's network server exposes 11,000 records
A California provider detected an exposed network server which put the health data of 11,000 patients at risk.
Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Cottage Health System had a team of cybersecurity experts test its data system security and found a server was exposed between Oct. 26 and Nov. 8.
Exposed information includes patient names, addresses, Social Security numbers and "limited" medical information, such as diagnoses and procedures, according to a statement.
A class-action lawsuit was filed against Cottage Health System in 2014 after the medical records of 32,500 patients were released to the public on the internet for two months before the hospital noticed.
